About: A small tree of woodland edge, hedgerows and grassland scrub.
How to identify: Recognisable by the broad, oval leaves with dense silky hairs underneath, an 'umbel' of white flowers turning into red and black berries in the autumn.
Where: Widespread in south east England, sometimes planted elsewhere.
Fantastic fact: The berries are poisonous and cause vomiting. Don't eat them!
