Name: Silver Birch
Scientific name: Betula pendula
Category: Trees and bushes
Nature Stars: 30
About: A small, spindly tree with thin branches. Found on heathland, moorland and mountainsides, as well as on dry sandy soils.
How to identify: Birches are easily recognised by their white papery bark. Told from the similar Downy Birch by the more triangular leaves with more jagged teeth, and the hairless leaf stalks.
Fantastic fact: The Silver Birch is the food plant for two species of shieldbug: the birch shieldbug and the parent bug, which can both be found feeding on the catkins in the late summer.
