What are nature stars?

About: A small, spindly tree with thin branches. Found on heathland, moorland and mountainsides, as well as on damp soils.

How to identify: Birches are easily recognised by their white papery bark. A more upright tree than Silver Birch, less 'weeping'. Leaves are more rounded on hairy stalks.

Where: Widespread.

Fantastic fact: Birch seeds are a favouite food for Siskins and Redpolls during the winter.
