Name: Water Measurer
Scientific name: Hydrometra stagnorum
Nature Stars: 30
About: A long legged, long, thin brown bug that lives on the surface of the water and around the edge of ponds and marshes. About 1cm long. Feeds on small insects, which it stabs with its long beak.
How to identify: Much more fragile looking than the similar Pond Skaters and Water Cricket, and more likely to be found on stagnant water or bare mud.
Fantastic fact: There are two very similar species of water measurer in the UK, which can be difficult to tell apart.
