About: A medium sized butterfly, white with black patches and markings. Wingspan measures about 5.5 cm. Adults are on the wing in the summer, June to August. A butterfly of warm, species rich grasslands where the adults particularly like to feed on purple flowers such as common knapweed. Caterpillars feed on a variety of grasses.
How to identify: Unmistakeable.
Where: Found on grasslands across southern England and south Wales.
Fantastic fact: The Marbled White is on the increase, perhaps as a result of climate change.
