About: A fairly common hoverfly, about 1.5cm long, mainly blackish with six white, comma-shaped spots on the body. Feeds on nectar, and is particularly common in the late summer. Its larvae feed on aphids - just like ladybirds do.
How to identify: Another fairly easy to identify hoverfly, although there are some closely related species which can look very similar.
Fantastic fact: A frequent migrant from the continent, sometimes in large numbers.
