About: A small to medium sized fish, 15-25cm. A member of the Carp family, with the typical carp shape. Found in rivers, where it often gathers in large shoals in shaded stretches. Omnivorous, feeding on invertebrates, fish eggs, plants and seeds.
How to identify: A slender member of the Carp family. Silvery in colour, with brownish fins. Smaller than Chubb and lighter build with duller fins, and more slender than Roach.
Where: Found throughout the lowlands, widespread in England but rarer in Wales and Scotland.
Fantastic fact: A female Dace may lay as may as 27,000 eggs each spring.
