About: Tawny owls are our largest common owl, the familiar 'brown owl' of Britain's woodlands, also found in parks and gardens. About 40cm tall, with a big rounded head and rounded wings. Tawny owls make the familiar 'too-wit too-woo' song during the nightbut did you know this is actually a male and female owl calling to each other! The female makes the 'too-wit' sound and the male answers with 'too-woo'!
How to identify: Unmistakeable.
Where: Widespread, but absent from Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.
Fantastic fact: Tawny owls can famously turn their head right the way round to be able look directly behind them.
