About: The Mute Swan is one of the most familiar birds in Britain, a very large white bird with a long curved neck. Mute Swans feed on plants, particularly water weed. Swans mate for life.

How to identify: The only common swan in most places, recognised by its reddish-orange bill with large black 'knob'.

Where: A common bird on ponds and lakes throughout the country.
