Scientific name: Streptopelia decaocto
Nature Stars: 10
About: A small pigeon, about 33cm long. Collared Doves are beigey-grey all over, with darker grey wing tips and paler patches at the shoulders and at the end of the tail and a black half-collar. Collared Doves are very common birds, found in farmland, parks and gardens.
How to identify: Less colourful than the Turtle Dove. They also sound different: Turtle Doves have a purring 'turrr turrr turr' song, compared to the familiar 'hoo hoooo-hoo' of the Collared Dove.
Where: Found everywhere.
Fantastic fact: The Collared Dove is one of the great colonisers of the bird world, having spread westwards from south east Europe, first arriving in the UK as recently as 1953. It has even reached America!
