About: Perhaps the most familiar and frequently seen owl, about 38cm long with long rounded wings. Barn Owls are ghostly white below, with a heart-shaped white face, black eyes and mottled silver grey and pale yellow above. They will often hunt during the daytime.
How to identify: Unmistakeable.
Where: Widespread, absent from the highlands of Scotland.
Fantastic fact: The Barn Owl is one of the most widespread birds in the world, found on all continents except Antarctica.
