About: A medium sized fish, 30-40cm long. A member of the Carp family, with the typical carp shape. A river fish, where it swims near the surface, often in large shoals. Omnivorous, feeding on invertebrates, fish eggs, plants and seeds.
How to identify: More slender than other members of the Carp family. Greenish silver in colour, with reddish, rounded fins. Larger than Dace with redder fins, and more slender than Roach.
Where: Found throughout the lowlands, widespread in England but rarer in Wales and Scotland.

Fantastic fact: As they get larger, chub become predatory, eating fish, frogs and even water voles.
