What are nature stars?

About: A medium-sized song bird, about 15cm long. Spotted Flycatchers are birds of open woodland, parks and gardens. They are a dull greyish brown above, paler beneath with a streaky crown and breast. They have a relatively long tail which is often flicked while flying in mid-air.

How to identify: A streaky greyish brown bird that sits on obvious perches, flying out to catch flies.

Where: A widespread summer visitor. Look for the flicking tail in mid-air.

Fantastic fact: One of the latest summer migrants to return to Britain, they don't reappear on their breeding territories until June and may only be around for a couple of months, just long enough to rear their young.
